Harmony & Kay Made Tenors, 3/4 Size or Terz Guitars & Mandolins, not yet "In the Workshop" for restoration, but available to "pre-order".

The current selection of Harmony Stella & Kay Silvertone Tenor, Stella Three-quarter/Terz Guitars & Harmony & Stella Mandolins I have in the process of, or waiting for restoration.

If you follow my listings you will know that from time to time (i.e. as often as I can get hold of them) I do list Tenor Guitars regularly, most often Stellas, but also as frequently as I can, the Harmony Archtone and Sovereign Tenor versions, although these do tend to be scarce and difficult to get hold off.....both types usually don't hang about long at all - with excellent feedback from buyers!

Within the last couple of years I have restored a Stella Tenor as a private project for David Bristow, well-known Midlands-based Bluesman, others to pro. players in this country and Germany, with another to Richard Hawley. Again I have been in touch with Richard recently, and he is very happy with his, and happy for me to use his endorsement....indeed he has since bought another Tenor Guitar from me....this time the Harmony Sovereign shown here.

My tenor guitar sales have been fascinating in regard to the quality of the players who have bought them. The Archtone archtop tenor is being gigged by Steve Harrison, Community & Traditional Folk Musician, in West Yorkshire.

I sell these superb little guitars as often as I can, but they are scarce and not easy to get hold off.

This is the 3/4 version - the little brother! - of the famous Stella H929, the full size version having been in production continuously for a full quarter of a century, from 1945 to 1970. It is very similar in dimensions to the iconic Martin Terz Guitars, and therefore equally suitable for that unique sounding Raised Third/Terz "G" Tuning, or other raised tunings. These are serious guitars, despite their small size, not toys in any sense, and I have sold as many as I can get hold of over the last 5 years or so, including the same size 3/4 version of another ultra long-running Harmony Spruce and Mahogany model, the H162.

I have not got round to completing restoration or selling any of these yet, but I am looking forward to doing so.....one of the Stellas I have done some work is playable, and not far from being fully up & running.
Models currently "In the Workshop" - Some of the photos displayed are of the individual guitars, some are from my archive, of other examples sold in the past. Please contact me for Prices and further details.

All these guitars will be restored to the same high standards as the scores of other Vintage Guitars which I have restored and sold over the years.

The concentration is on structural soundness and playability, rather than any cosmetic touching-up, and certainly no ill-advised refinishing, but of course the guitars are sympathetically cleaned, setup and re-strung, as part restoration.

For individual details on the various guitars, and the restoration work being done on them, please do contact me by email or telephone.
Action, strings & cases
I set out to achieve a 12th. fret action of around 2.5mm./3mm. on these guitars...but if that sounds high to you, please bear in mind that we are in a totally different world of guitar-playing here, to which we cannot apply the "all my guitars have an action of less than 2mm." approach. These are 12 string blues guitars, needing a higher action, and it may be that players will use a bottleneck slide, in which case a low/electric type action just does not work, and some fret clearance is essential.

Various string gauge options are available for Tenor Guitars, according to the tuning you intend to employ - specially gauged sets are produced by locally-based Newtone Strings & available through Eagle Music.

On the 3/4 or Terz, Martin Bronze Light 12-54 strings can be fitted for concert pitch tuning. Extra-light steels, or Martin Silk and Steel strings, can be fitted as an alternative, which are a better choice if you will be using raised tunings. Depending on how it is played the guitar can produce a very 30s sound you might expect to hear on an old Gospel 78, and a high lilting chime, in a way somewhere between a 12 string acoustic Guitar and a Mandolin. For this some players tune them up slightly, but for this you would certainly fit lighter strings, and I have heard this model elsewhere, similarly sounding superb fitted with Silk & Steel Strings.

The guitars do not usually come with cases, although I do have some of the original covered pressed-board cases originally supplied with these guitars....those who remember these will recall that they are not exactly what we would now call a fitted case! Alternatively, on occasion I can get a small classical size Hiscox Liteflite hardshell case for the Tenor size model & for Mandolins, offering infinitely better protection....sometimes these do have to be specially fitted out, but these are not available for the 3/4 guitars. Additional case prices available on request.

Bluesman's Vintage Harmony & Stella Guitar Collection.

I have a copy of the February 2011 Issue of "Guitar & Bass" Magazine, which includes an article entitled "Harmony Central"*, in which Ian Siegal discusses his adored collection of Vintage '60s Harmony and Stella Guitars!

In addition to the Testimonials on The Home Page, and this page, to see the hundreds of complimentary feedback comments kindly left for me by eBay buyers, please check out my eBay ID "vintagetraditionalguitars", and eBay Shop "Vintage and Traditional Guitars".

Also, I sold a similar Stella H927 and a fixed bridge type Silvertone H604 about 18 months ago to Rick Astley, who has been in touch recently, with the following testimonial quote:-

"Bob is very knowledgeable and is a pleasure to deal with.
I bought a 1963 Stella and a 1966 Silvertone from Bob a while back and love them both.

Rick Astley"

I have a stock of guitars which is added to regularly, but some tend to take a little time to find their way through my workshop, so if you do not see what you are looking for on my website currently, please enquire - who knows, I may have just what you are looking for!
