....sorry, this one has gone now, but you will find details of the various types of vintage guitars I specialise in restoring for sale, in the earlier pages of the website, both already completed & yet to be restored & which may be reserved on pre-order in advance....please enquire if you are interested in buying one.

Many of the restored vintage guitars I sell are now "pre-sold" - their restoration is completed for a particular buyer who has enquired from previous sales.

Please get in touch if you are looking for a similar guitar - I have a good stock coming through the workshop!

I think that the CMI - Cleartone Musical Instruments - story is well-known - set up by Jim Marshall, of Marshall Amplifiers, as opposed to the entirely unconnected Chicago Musical Instruments, of the one-time Gibson connection, and importing good quality Japanese made "replica" guitars through the 1970s, and up to about 1980/1981. Although from the Lawsuit Era of Japanese copies of iconic USA Model Guitars, these were not cheap guitars in their day!

A very convincing and desirable replica of the iconic Cherry Sunburst Les Paul Custom, which has now been fully checked-over & set-up in the workshop of the well-respected luthier I work with. The guitar shows the characteristic bound & inlayed headstock, block inlay pattern and other details similar to the original, including the "Open book" style headstock.
Stock Number - VTG1018.

I bought this guitar several years ago, since when, sadly it has seen only occasional use. It came without the stop-bar tailpiece & tune-o-matic bridge, and appropriate replacement Gold coloured fittings were installed. It has now been inspected by the well-respected luthier I work with, who has checked the electrics and advised, as detailed under the "Condition" heading below.

This is a substantial quality guitar...weight approx. 4.0kg./8.8lbs....just about the norm for a Gibson Les Paul. The pickups do not have the ultra-high output of some, but experienced players will always tell you that high output does not equal great tone. Some of the very best tone is obtained from pickups which are do not have a high output rating. Certainly I listened to the luthier playing this guitar through his workshop amp, from the far end of the workshop...always a better place to judge the sound, rather than as a player, and it sounded great to me. The design, layout & operation of controls is classic Les Paul....nothing more I can usefully add!
Following inspection in conjunction with the luthier I work with the guitar has been fully checked & a minor overhaul/set-up has being completed. The cosmetic condition is very good....body/neck finish marking is really minimal for any vintage guitar, with just a couple of small chips where the finish has come away on the back.....overall though for a guitar of at least 35 years age, it looks stunning, as I think you will agree is shown in the photos! Although the gold finish to the original hardware is a little worn & aged....as I guess it should be....it is not nearly as heavily worn as many similar age & type guitars I have seen! As mentioned the stop-bar tailpiece & tune-o-matic bridge are modern replacements in pristine condition.

The electrics have been checked over, and controls adjusted, and I have completed a stoning & re-profile of the frets, in addition to a clean up & oiling of the fingerboard. The tuners are enclosed machines, with gold covers, with minimal finish wear for their age and work fine. The photos were taken before minor overhaul/set-up work commenced, but there will be no change in appearance & I hope that you will agree that photos show what an outstanding example of a vintage guitar this is!
Action, strings & cases
The action is excellent at around 1.5mm./2mm. at the 12th fret. The nut width is 42.5mm., and the scale length 628mm./24.75". The existing strings are little used, but aged & therefore due for replacement, but it is assumed that the buyer of a quality guitar such as this will have their own preferred strings to fit.

The original Soft Case, with broken zip is included, but I may be able to supply a Hiscox Liteflite hardshell case at modest additional cost....indeed I now have one available if required.

I have a stock of guitars which is added to regularly, but some tend to take a little time to find their way through my workshop, so if you do not see what you are looking for on my website currently, please enquire - who knows, I may have just what you are looking for!

**** YOUTUBE ****

I have not been able to find a demo clip of a CMI Les Paul....not yet at least, so meantime I have included the YouTube clip entitled "Telecaster by CMI sound demo" by "Guitar666", which shows just how good these CMIs can sound. I'm sure that you will find other clips of very similar Japanese-made LPs, also sounding good.
