Another one I could happily hang onto this guitar myself....I think it looks stunning! Perhaps that is why I have been rather slow in getting around to completing the overhaul/re-string I am currently doing in the workshop!
Description
Stock Number: VTG1438.

Not all digits of the Serial Number are fully clear to read, but starting 80******** very clearly, coupled with the known production period of these guitars from 1977 to 1982, positively dates the guitar to 1980.

I assume that the guitar has been played in the past with a soundhole pickup....pickup no longer present, but there is a jack socket in the side of the lower bout, and a lead inside with mini-jack.....I'm looking at one or two (unused) soundhole pickups I have in the workshop, and if suitable may well fit one.
Condition
For a 38 year old guitar, it is in remarkably clean condition....really no significant marks on it! It plays well "as-is" with good action.

Nevertheless, the overhaul I had in mind was going to include dressing the fingerboard, stoning & re-profiling the frets, but on further inspection I was not happy with the rather low height of the original frets. I have removed them and I am in the process of installing new frets, after a gentle re-leveling of the very nice Rosewood fingerboard, maintaining the 16" radius. I am also dressing, re-profiling & reducing the height of the bridge a little, together with ramping the bridge pin holes, not to reduce the string action height as there is no need to do so, but rather to improve the break angle of the strings over the saddle, increasing downward pressure & improving sound transmission prior to re-stringing & set-up adjustments.
Action, strings & cases
Good 12th. fret action of around 2.5mm./3mm. to be maintained after bridge dressing & set-up adjustments. Will be strung with Martin Bronze XL 10-46 strings, unless specifically requested to fit heavier set, which would only be suitable for lowered tunings.

There is no case with the guitar, but I have available a Hiscox Liteflite case, which fits perfectly, and is available at a modest additional price.

There are many and various YouTube demo clips of vintage Yamaha 12-strings, but so far the embedded clip below, entitled "MY BLOODY THUMB. (original ) on a Yamaha FG-412SB" by "jamtown63" is the only one I've found for the same model.....you can't see it too well, but you can hear it!
